Kipp & Zonen Pyranometers (CMP3, CMP6)

Kipp & Zonen pyranometers are state-of-the-art instruments for measuring global solar irradiance (incident solar energy) used in meteorology, solar energy, climatology, and hydrology. The manufacturer offers a range of models, from the simplified, affordable CMP3 variants, through the more robust CMP6 and advanced SMP10, to the high-temperature CM4 model for extreme conditions. Each model is designed to meet the international ISO 9060 standard, ensuring reliability and comparability of measurements under various climatic conditions.

  • Measurement of incident global solar radiation in W/m²
  • Thermopile detector with a 180° field of view
  • Various accuracy classes according to ISO 9060 (C, B, A)
  • Recommended for weather stations, PV monitoring, and climatology
  • Variable outputs (analog 0–1 V / 4–20 mA or digital RS-485)

Description

Pyranometers operate on the principle of thermopile detectors, which convert solar radiation captured over a hemispherical field of view of 180° into an electrical signal proportional to the light intensity. Thanks to their robust design with glass or quartz domes, these devices are resistant to weather, humidity, and temperature fluctuations.

The various models differ as follows:
- CMP3: basic ISO 9060 Class C pyranometer (economy model).
- CMP6: mid-range ISO 9060 Class B radiation measurement.

Applications

  • Meteorological measurements of solar radiation
  • Monitoring of PV systems and solar energy
  • Climatological and environmental data
  • Technology management and control of heating systems
  • Integration into telemetry stations
