Parshall flumes

Parshall flumes

Parshall flumes are among the most widely used weir structures designed to measure both instantaneous flow and total volume of wastewater by measuring the water level in the flume and applying the appropriate consumption equation.

  • The most common weir structures
  • Measurement of instantaneous flow rate and total wastewater volume
  • Measurement based on the water level in the channel and the corresponding consumption equation
  • The overflow depth is measured in a tapered profile
  • Delivery, transportation, and installation of the channel are provided

Description

An advantage of the Parshall flume is that the overflow depth (water level) is measured in a converging section, where the velocity increases and the streamlines are more stable. Any sedimenting substances settle to the bottom of the channel before reaching the Parshall flume; therefore, this measurement method is generally not sensitive to sedimentation, and at higher flow rates, undissolved substances are washed past the Parshall flume.
FIEDLER AMS s.r.o. handles the delivery and transport of the Parshall flume from the manufacturer to the installation site and, following its installation, also equips the flume with appropriate measuring equipment.

Applications

  • Standard Parshall flumes are used primarily at sites with a narrow range of flow rates
  • For a wider range of flow rates, it is advisable to use combined Parshall flumes
