Evaluation units for KDO probes

Q2/KDO – Velocity Flow Meter

The flow measurement system consists of a Q2/KDO or Q2-G/KDO telemetry unit, a flow velocity sensor, and a level sensor for the measured medium.

  • Wide flow velocity measurement range in both directions, up to ±6 m/s
  • Flow meter designs for installation in open channels and in pipe walls
  • The aerodynamic shape of the velocity probe minimizes flow disturbance
  • No mechanically moving parts
  • Particularly suitable for locations without existing or hydraulically unsuitable measurement profiles
  • Telemetry unit with automatic data transfer to a server database
  • Extensive software support on the server (graphical and tabular visualizations, monthly balance reports, etc.)
  • Easy expansion of the flowmeter to measure additional parameters (levels, pressures, temperatures, etc.)
  • Built-in PLC for controlling smaller wastewater treatment plants, pumping stations, etc.
  • Flowmeter parameters configurable via the Internet

Description

The intelligent KDO flow velocity sensor operates on the Doppler principle and is available in a mechanical design for installation on the bottom of a trough or in a pipe wall. The sensor emits a series of ultrasonic pulses at a 45° angle into the measured medium and calculates the flow velocity based on the frequency shift of the signal reflected from particles carried by the flow. This measurement method also allows for the measurement of reverse flow velocity and is applicable up to a maximum velocity of 6 m/sec. The sensor includes a 10-meter cable, through which the sensor is powered by the Q2/KDO unit and through which data communication also takes place via the RS485 interface. If necessary, this cable can be extended to a maximum distance of 500 meters.
When measuring flow rates in open channels, it is necessary to measure the water level in addition to the flow velocity. Water level measurement can be provided, for example, by a US1200 ultrasonic probe installed above the water surface, or a KDO sensor containing its own hydrostatic sensor can be supplied. Communication between the US1200 probe and the Q2/KDO data logger also takes place via the RS485 bus.
Based on the flow velocity and water level signals, the Q2/KDO evaluation unit continuously calculates both instantaneous and cumulative flow rates using a predefined cross-sectional profile and archives these values.

Applications

  • Measurement of water flow in pipes or open channels without the need to construct a measuring flume or weir
  • In combination with the G2-G/KDO telemetry unit: measuring wastewater flow at wastewater treatment plants and in industrial facilities, monitoring river flows, and in any location where it is not possible to construct measuring profiles due to a narrowing of the flow cross-section or insufficient head
